Must KnowNCERT Core Syllabus
Meet the Integers
  • Integers = whole numbers (0, 1, 2...) + their negative counterparts (-1, -2, -3...)
  • Positive (+): right of zero — credits, heights, above-freezing temps
  • Negative (-): left of zero — debits, depths, below-freezing temps
  • Zero is the neutral anchor — neither positive nor negative
Bela's Building & Movement
  • Vertical number line: Ground Floor (0) is the Welcome Hall
  • Addition: Starting Floor + Movement = Target Floor
  • Subtraction: Target Floor − Starting Floor = Movement Needed
  • Brahmagupta's Rule (628 CE): subtracting a negative = adding the positive
Token Model & Zero Pairs
  • Additive Inverse: every n has opposite −n; n + (−n) = 0
  • Zero Pair: one positive + one negative token cancel out
  • Not enough tokens to subtract? Add a Zero Pair first, then hand over
Integers in the Real World
  • Banker: Deposits = Credit (+); spends = Debit (−); overspend → negative balance
  • Geography: Everest +8,849 m; Mariana Trench −11,034 m; sea level = 0
  • Weather: Water freezes at 0°C; Delhi summer +40°C; Leh winter −4°C
  • Mineshaft Trick: Total distance travelled = subtract start from end (sign-aware)
The Other Side of Zero
🔑 Key Terms
Additive Inverse
A number's exact opposite; added together they make zero
Zero Pair
One positive + one negative token that cancel to zero
Predecessor
Subtract 1, move one step left (predecessor of −10 is −11)
Successor
Add 1, move one step right on the number line
Quick Recall — Sprint Facts
Addition Start + Movement = Target
Subtraction Target − Start = Movement
Brahmagupta's Rule a − (−b) = a + b
Size Rule −10 is smaller than −3
🏆 Olympiad & Challenger Edge
Multiplication & Division
"Enemy of your enemy is your friend" — like signs give +, unlike signs give −. E.g. (−144) ÷ (+12) = −12
Absolute Value |a|
Distance from zero, always non-negative. |−7| + (−6) + |3| = 7 − 6 + 3 = 4
BODMAS Challenge
77 − [78 − {−2 − 6×(−5)}]: step-by-step resolution gives 27
Net Balance Word Problems
Flower seller: 12 red roses (+₹5 each) needs 30 yellow roses (−₹2 each) to net zero
Predecessor of Negatives
Predecessor of −215 is −216, not −214 — the line runs "in reverse"
Counting "Strictly Between"
Between −5 and +5: count the 9 integers, don't just subtract (5−(−5)=10 is wrong here)
Zero Pairs in Subtraction
To solve (+5) − (+6): add a Zero Pair to get 6 positives to hand over, leaving −1
Algebraic Logic (HOTS)
56 − (−34) + (−22) + k = −25 → apply Brahmagupta's Rule, solve step-by-step for k = −93
The Mall Elevator
Toys Store (−1) to Art Centre (+2): upward movement of exactly 3 floors
Net Balance Tracking
₹0 → Credit ₹500 → Debit ₹300 → Debit ₹400 → Final Balance −₹200
The Gamer's Scoreboard
Correct answer +4 points; wrong answer or trap −2 points — net score can go negative
Temperature Drop, Leh
−2°C at 2 PM, drops 6°C by evening → −8°C as the sun sets
The Size Illusion
−10 is NOT greater than −3. Further left on the negative side means smaller
Double Negative Trap
(−3) + (−4) is NOT +7. Adding two debts creates a bigger debt: −7
Forgetting to Flip the Sign
0 − (−15) is NOT −15. Subtracting a negative flips to addition: +15
BODMAS Bracket Order
Resolve innermost brackets first — skipping steps causes sign errors in nested expressions
Logic Chain — How Subtraction Becomes "Movement"
Step 1
You know your Starting Floor and want to reach a Target Floor — this sets up the question
Step 2
Target − Starting connects to the Movement Needed, which can be positive (up) or negative (down)
Step 3
If the operation involves subtracting a negative, this leads to Brahmagupta's Rule — flip to addition
Step 4
Applying the flipped sign produces the correct final Target Floor, completing the movement

Mentor Byte
Stop memorizing plus-minus rules and start visualizing physical movement. Seeing (+5) − (+6)? Imagine holding 5 positive tokens but owing 6 — add a Zero Pair to your pocket, hand over 6 positives, and 1 negative remains behind. Ground every equation in physical reality, and the algebra will never trick you.
For Parents
Practice the "elevator test" at home — ask your child to describe going from one floor to another using only addition and subtraction of integers.
