Score better without studying more.
Exam tips that actually move the needle.

Real, specific tactics for the Periodic Test, Half-Yearly, and Annual exam, not general advice. New to how CBSE exams are structured? Start with the exam pattern first.

The one shift that changes everything

Close to half of every paper now rewards application and reasoning, not recall. A child who can explain why something happens will outscore one who can only recite what happens. The single best daily habit: after reading a concept, have your child explain it back in their own words with a real example, not the textbook's. If they can't, that's what to revise, not the next chapter.

How long should an answer actually be?
Very Short Answer1 word to 1 sentence, roughly 10 to 20 words
Short Answer30 to 50 words, 2 to 3 sentences or a short paragraph
Long Answer80 to 120 words, detailed, multi-point
Paragraph or Essay100 to 120 words

CBSE doesn't enforce a strict word count for Class 6 and 7 school exams, these are the standard ranges teachers and sample papers actually use. Going well over the limit rarely earns extra marks and costs real time.

Tips by exam type

Periodic Test
  • Short syllabus, so aim for full marks on MCQs and fill-in-the-blanks, these are the easiest to lose carelessly.
  • Practise from a real question bank daily rather than re-reading notes, recognition speed is what's being tested.
  • This score gets averaged into internal assessment, so consistency across tests matters more than one great result.
Half-Yearly Exam
  • First real timed paper, so do at least one full mock under exam conditions before the real one, a clock, no notes, start to finish.
  • Read the whole paper before writing anything. Two minutes spent planning which questions to attempt first saves far more time later.
  • Attempt every question, even partially. A half-answered Long Answer earns marks. A blank one earns zero.
Annual Exam
  • Whole year's syllabus, so revise in reverse, start with what was taught most recently, since it's the least revised, then work backward.
  • For Long Answer questions with an internal choice, read both options before picking. The more familiar-sounding one isn't always the easier one.
  • Redraw every compulsory Science diagram from memory at least five times before the exam. Labelling under pressure is a different skill from recognising a labelled diagram.
  • Leave the last 10 minutes to check, not write. A wrong unit, a missing label, a skipped sub-part, these cost the most avoidable marks.

Writing answers that don't waste time

Short Answers should hit the point in the first sentence, then support it. An examiner scanning fifty papers rewards the answer they can grade fastest, not the longest one.

Long Answers score better with visible structure, a short heading or underline, bullet points where they fit, and one real example. A wall of unbroken text loses marks even when the content is correct, simply because it's harder to credit.

Map work and diagrams are pure practice, not knowledge. Ten minutes on a blank outline map, done weekly, builds more exam-day confidence than an hour of reading the same chapter again.

The 20% that isn't the exam at all

Internal assessment is worth a real 20 marks, and it's earned across the term, not on exam day. Active participation, classroom discussion, oral quizzes, group work, feeds directly into it. So does a portfolio kept up as the term goes, not assembled the night before it's due. Steady effort here is the cheapest marks on the entire paper.
